From the graceful lines of the John Moreschi Gazebo in Chess Park, to the historic buildings along Main Street, to the beautiful riverfront aquatorium, Monongahela is a place where families want to live for generations. Chess Park is open to the public and is used on a regular basis for weddings, park festivals, Flag Day ceremonies, concerts and most recently, "Dickens Of A Christmas" during the Christmas season. Chess Park is rich in history and has become an outdoor museum. The park is home for a bell which was cast in 1865 and used at the old Central School, a cannon from the Civil War, a memorial to honor veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and a walk way/honor roll to pay tribute to all of the men and women from Monongahela and the surrounding areas who served in the armed forces. The Noble J. Dick Aquatorium, located on the Monongahela River, is open year round and is used to host major events, including carnivals, concerts and an annual Fourth of July celebration. The aquatorium is also a riverfront facility and is used on a daily basis for fishing, boating, and swimming. You can sit on the bleachers and watch the activities on the river We have an active Chamber of Commerce, which works hand in hand with the City and provides our community with enjoyable events throughout the year. We are a community rich in the number of churches of all denominations. We have a diversified business community capable of taking care of the needs of our public. There are numerous civic and volunteer organizations that devote time and energy participating in public events throughout the year. Although Monongahela's traditions haven't changed much over the years, we are dedicated to making it a better place to live through redevelopment projects. At the present time we are working to revitalize West Main Street from 12th Street to the border of New Eagle. The completion of the Mon Valley Expressway will bring more businesses into our area and that means our community will grow and prosper. Monongahela is a community rich in historic background and proud of the many accomplishments of those native to her. Just as our ancestors were committed to their ideals we are also committed to continuing the progress of our city and the welfare of every citizen and visitor. I am proud of our past accomplishments and enthusiastic for the future of the City of Monongahela. Won't you join us and share in the many activities throughout the year or visit us at our website cityofmonongahela.com. Kenneth L. Cole, Mayor |
